How to practice chord melody style in all chords

In this video I'll show you how to approach your daily chord melody practice so that you can develop the same creative freedom in chord melody style that you have when you are playing single-note melody lines.

Join my upcoming chord melody workshop in January, 2020!

Learn to play and improvise in chord melody style in this 12-week online group course. Beginners welcome! Through step-by-step creative exercises and my personal coaching, you'll learn to express yourself creatively in chord melody style on the guitar.

Here's what you'll learn:

  • How to arrange any song in chord melody style for totally unaccompanied solo guitar
  • How to IMPROVISE with complete freedom in chord melody style
  • How to see chords all around you when you are soloing so that you can add them to your solo
  • How to use chord melody as an incredible tool for learning about harmony and ear training

Open to everyone - Beginners welcome!

You do not need to be an expert in the IFR method or have any experience at all with chord melody guitar. If you know how to play just one major scale on your guitar (and I'll teach you if you don't), then you already have everything you need to start playing the guitar in chord melody style, which will accelerate every aspect of your guitar playing and your musical ability.

12 weekly video lessons

Every week you'll get a video lesson teaching you how to build the next level of your chord melody practice. The exercises are designed so that we'll all be going through the process together. If you're a beginner to chord melody, you can practice the techniques using very simple harmonic material that you're going to really enjoy making music with. If you're more advanced then we can expand on these techniques and apply them to more sophisticated harmonic material. But we'll all be going through the course together, supporting each other every step of the way.

Weekly creative exercises and feedback

The second element of the course are weekly projects and creative exercises to work on. These are optional, so if you're not able to practice one week you can still keep right on going with the course. But these creative exercises give you the opportunity to get my personal feedback and help with your playing, because you can record yourself with your cell phone camera and share these recordings with me directly. You can send me these videos privately if you don't want anyone else to see them. Or you can also share them with the entire group so that you can also get feedback and ideas from other guitarists in the course.

Community, questions and coaching

The third element in the course is a private Facebook Group where the entire community can share ideas, ask questions and even upload recordings of our practicing. This is a great opportunity for you to make friends with other IFR guitarists, some of whom I've been working with for years. I think it's going to be a lot of fun and my hope is that you'll make connections that will be a great source of help and encouragement.

Your own personal chord melody arrangement

As part of this course, you're going to learn a complete chord melody arrangement of a song that YOU are going to choose. This alone will be an incredible learning experience for you because you'll get to understand all of the issues involved in recognizing which kinds of songs can really work for solo guitar, how to break down the song harmonically, how to develop the foundational abilities that you'll need, how to create an arrangement that will be musically powerful and also fun to play, and finally how to really bring out the beauty of the music in your interpretation and performance. The result is that you'll come away from this course with a complete chord melody arrangement that you've created yourself and that you can perform for other people.
