IFR Jazz Standards Study Group

  • Tired of practicing alone and having to face the question of "what to practice" every day?
  • Would you love to have creative activities organized for you each week, so that you can just show up and play?
  • Would you like to meet other musicians who are on the same journey you are?

Join our study group from September through June!

You should join our study group! There will be no extreme demands on your time, and you'll have creative activities organized for you every time you sit down to practice. You'll also have the motivation of sharing this experience with many other musicians who will be studying the same material with you. A lot of people have signed up and we're going to have a fantastic group! This will be a place of friendship and learning together, with a lot of beautiful music!

Here's how it works. Starting this Saturday, September 10, both David and Mireia will be teaming up to offer a new IFR workshop called the "Jazz Standards Study Group". Each month we will study a new jazz standard together! This is a great way to bring all of your musical skills and knowledge together for a creative musical purpose. Each month we will break down a new standard with weekly video lessons, backing tracks, ear training videos and other practice tools so that you can master each song in small pieces and then put all of the pieces together.

The format of the study group will be similar to our very successful past IFR workshops. Our model combines our online student forum for group discussion, coaching and feedback, along with high quality learning materials that you will keep forever.

Relaxed pace with no scheduling hassles

Our study group will run from September through June, and each month you will learn a new jazz standard. There will be no scheduling hassles or extreme demands on your time. You can practice the activities on your own schedule. We will give you everything you need to stay on track, with creative activities and exercises organized for you each week.

Here are some of the beautiful jazz standards that you will be learning:

  • Autumn Leaves
  • Fly Me to the Moon
  • My Funny Valentine
  • Blue Monk
  • Summertime
  • Green Dolphin Street
  • plus 4 more beautiful standards!

Weekly video lessons, audio practice tools, backing tracks, ear training videos and more!

In addition to the group interaction and our own personal coaching, we will also provide high quality learning materials to help you really master these tunes and to find your own creative voice improvising over them. Here's everything you'll get in our study group:

  • Complete breakdown of each song, with jam tracks to practice each little section before combining them together
  • IFR analysis of each chord progression (the familiar IFR chord columns and circles)
  • Mireia's ear training videos for each chord progression!
  • A complete IFR analysis of the melody with video exercises to internalize each melody in tonal numbers
  • Harmony parts that you can play to accompany someone else playing the melody. (This is a beautiful effect in a jam session!)
  • Group discussion with personal coaching and feedback on your playing!

Open to everyone - Beginners welcome!

The study group is open to all instruments and ability levels. Don't let the term "jazz standards" intimidate you. Most people don't realize that jazz standards are actually much simpler harmonically than most rock songs, which is why they are ideal vehicles for very free and creative improvising. This is why so many people LOVE improvising over these tunes in jam sessions. Join us in learning the most popular standards so you can join in these jam sessions!

Note: The IFR Standards Workouts are NOT a prerequisite for this study group. What we're going to do in this study group will go MUCH deeper than those courses. And in this study group we'll give you everything you need to really understand these beautiful songs and enjoy improvising over them.
