Special message from Alon Cooper

Alon CooperOver the last 10 years, I've tried more than a dozen different ear training programs, apps, books, CD's...for some of them I have paid hundreds of dollars. Sadly, none of them delivered on their promises, and I've seen pretty much zero results in the real world. I thought the problem is that I just had "weak" ears. Yes, I did eventually learn to tell the difference between intervals I heard in an app. But I never figured out why it doesn't help me one bit with actually trying to figure out chords or melodies by ear and play them on the guitar / piano.

It was only 12 months ago when a friend found the IFR website and sent me the link, that I had a feeling that this time it will actually deliver on the promises - because it focuses on something different than what the vast majority of the methods do (singing the scale degrees in numbers instead of only recognizing intervals). One year later and I'm in a COMPLETELY different place when it comes to music. I can figure out melodies almost instantly and play them on the guitar / harmonica / piano intuitively. I can listen to a new song and usually know intuitively where my fingers should go when I reach for the guitar to play the chords. And with minimal trial and error - I can sing my favorite songs' melodies and bass lines in scale degrees.

I FEEL the notes, finally.

I think that every music learner should be using the IFR method!

You can be doing all of these things much sooner than you think! All you need is a simple understanding of how music really works and how to connect with your own musical creativity.

guitarist practicing musical improvisationThese abilities don't come from memorizing other people's "licks" or studying music theory on paper. What you need is a deeper understanding of music that enables you to connect your ear with your instrument. In other words, what you really need is a creative daily practice that lets you understand music from the inside out, and truly create your own music.

Improvise for Real will take you into this beautiful world of sounds and show you how music and harmony really work. You'll learn to understand the sounds in the music all around you. And you'll learn to express your own musical ideas exactly as you hear them in your mind.

The desire to express your own music

If you are reading this, then you can probably identify with some of the following frustrations, which are a lot more common than you think:

  • Are you mystified by people who can pick up their instrument and immediately begin playing along with any kind of music?
  • Have you ever felt ashamed of your own musical ability, just because you couldn’t improvise over a particular song or couldn’t find the right notes?
  • Do you wish you could play your favorite songs off the top of your head without any need for sheet music?student struggling with music theory
  • Does your heart sink when you see a page full of complicated chord symbols, because you have no idea what’s really going on?
  • Do you feel like you're struggling to connect scales and arpeggios together to make a solo? Do you wish you could weave melodies effortlessly through the chord changes and truly express yourself creatively?
  • Would you love to be able to participate in jam sessions and feel totally confident and sure of yourself, no matter what’s going on around you?
  • Do you dream of being able to discover and express your own music, the music that lies deep inside your imagination?

You’re not alone!

Improvise for Real brings together musicians from all different backgrounds who share your desire to truly understand music and to enjoy creating it yourself. We want to be able to understand music by ear and to improvise with confidence in any musical situation. And we want to learn to play directly from our imagination, expressing the sounds and melodies that we imagine.

The problem isn’t you. The problem is the way you practice.

happy violinistEveryone can learn to understand music by ear! You just need an organized path and the right guidance. The key to success with ear training is to study the sounds in a musical context, taking advantage of your own natural ability to feel and enjoy music. You don't need dry academic technical exercises. You just need to get to know each sound in a musical way and discover its unique beauty. This is exactly what we do in our multimedia video courses, with lots of singing, playing and jamming along the way.

Enjoy this free sample lesson from the method Alon is describing!

We begin our ear training journey by studying the first three notes of the major scale. In this video lesson we introduce notes 1, 2 and 3, and Mireia shows you the feelings of tension and release in these notes.

In this first lesson we also introduce the three main exercises we are going to practice in this course to get to know the sounds of the major scale: singing, creating and feeling.

We will study this material with three different exercises:

1) Sing the Numbers

Use the Sing the Numbers tracks to practice singing the numbers in a musical context. In the tracks I will sing a sequence of numbers and you just have to sing it back after me, only using your voice.

Listen carefully to the sounds as you sing them and visualize them in your mind. Singing is a very important part of ear training, because this is our first step to processing sounds in our mind.

Sing the Numbers Track 1

Track 1 is a meditative exploration of notes 1, 2 and 3. The purpose of this first track is to help you become absolutely clear about the very different sensations produced by these three notes.

Sing the Numbers Track 2

Track 2 focuses on connecting the notes together in short phrases over a more rhythmic accompaniment.

Sing the Numbers Track 3

Track 3 is the most melodic and songlike presentation of the sounds. This track will help you learn to recognize the notes of the major scale even when they appear in the form of beautiful melodies that activate a different part of your listening mind.

2) Creative Exploration

In this activity you will explore the sounds on your instrument over a backing track, playing and singing at the same time. In this workshop I am providing you jam tracks in different styles to practice this activity. From the jam tracks, choose a key, choose a style and start playing notes 1, 2, 3 over the backing track. Just improvise freely with the sounds, playing the notes you want to hear.

Improvising and creating something of your own with the sounds is what gives them meaning. It also gives you the opportunity to contemplate the sounds at your own pace, experience their feeling and enjoy their quality.

We sing and play at the same time because we want to create a connection between the music you hear in your mind and the music you play with your instrument. If you play a wind instrument that doesn't allow you to sing out loud while you play, you can just sing the numbers to yourself in your mind as you play the notes.

You can use the sample backing track below to accompany your creative exploration of the sounds. (The full lesson includes backing tracks in all 12 keys so you can find one that fits your voice perfectly).

Key of C (note 1 = C)

3) Feel the Numbers

Use the Feel the Numbers tracks to practice recognizing the sounds by ear. These tracks are very similar to the Sing the Numbers tracks, but instead of hearing me sing numbers first, you'll hear me play a sequence of notes on the piano and you'll sing them back in numbers.

This is an ability that takes time to develop. In order to be able to recognize the sounds by ear, you need to spend time with them first. So If you feel like these tracks are too hard for you, just go back and spend more time with the sounds practicing the other two exercises.

I hope you have a great time exploring notes 1, 2, 3!

Feel the Numbers Track 1

Track 1 is slow and meditative, and it leaves you time to feel and recognize notes 1, 2, 3.

Feel the Numbers Track 2

Track 2 has a more rhythmic accompaniment but still only uses notes 1, 2, 3.

Feel the Numbers Track 3

Track 3 is more songlike and it has longer musical sentences using notes 1, 2, 3.

Practice tip

In ear training, the key is spending time with the sounds. Our minds can understand new concepts very quickly, but our ear needs time to catch up! So even if some of these exercises seem easy to you, the power is in doing them over and over. Look for a mindful approach that allows you to be present, with no hurry, and enjoy the beauty of the sounds.

Song analysis: Free Fallin’ by Tom Petty

Here's a supplemental activity that you might enjoy doing with me. I am going to walk you through the steps of recognizing the numbers of a melody by ear. We will do it with the song Free Fallin' by Tom Petty, which only uses notes 1, 2 and 3.

This is the process described in the video:

1. Sing the lyrics along with the recording of song.

2. Hum the melody without the lyrics to strengthen your perception of the melody.

3. Slow it down and break it in little pieces.

4. Listen carefully to each sound of the melody and feel which number it is in relation to the tonal center. Take notes, write down your findings.

5. When you know the numbers of the whole song, sing the melody in numbers along with the original recording. (Singing melodies you know in numbers can help you bring together everything you are learning.)

6. Play the melody on your instrument in many different keys while you sing or visualize the numbers in your mind.

Trying this on your own

If you want to put this into practice, try analyzing these melodies on your own:

Mary Had a Little Lamb - children's song

My Father's House by Bruce Springsteen (the melody to this song only uses notes 1, 2, 3, but just in one of the phrases, Bruce Springsteen finishes a melody with an ornamentation going down to note 6 below 1.)

Are You All Right by Lucinda Williams (verse only)

Open to everyone - Beginners welcome!

Everyone can learn to understand music by ear.

Course 1: Ear Training for Musical Creativity

Ear Training for Musical CreativityImagine being able to listen to a song and recognize every note of the melody by ear. What would that do for your musical creativity and improvising? In this video course you will learn how to develop this ability, adding a whole new creative dimension to your improvising.

I believe that this course will be one of those "before and after" moments in your life, changing the way you think about music and opening many new doors for you creatively. Through step-by-step video lessons, audio tracks and creative exercises, you'll learn to recognize the sounds in the music all around you and to play songs and melodies by ear.

Immediate benefits to your playing:

  • Recognize melodies by ear and play them in any key on your instrument without having to fumble for the notes.
  • Play along with friends at parties and jam sessions and find the notes of any song on your instrument.
  • Play directly from your musical imagination when you are improvising, expressing the sounds you hear in your mind.
  • Learn to orient yourself by ear in the key of the music when you are jamming with other musicians.
  • Engage in a true dialogue with other soloists, responding to their musical ideas and interacting musically with them.

How is this course different from other ear training programs?

Experiencing the sounds as music. Every step of the way, you'll be hearing the sounds in the context of beautiful songs and melodies. So the connection to real music is very present right from the start. This is one of the biggest complaints that musicians have about other ear training programs. They get better at identifying random intervals in the context of a quiz, but they still can't recognize anything in the songs they hear on the radio. So we think it's very important to study and appreciate the beauty of the sounds every step of the way, and that means hearing all of the sounds in the context of actual music.

Using your own natural ability. It's not about developing "perfect pitch" or any other unusual ability. This is something everyone can do. If I were to sing the melody to your favorite song, you would recognize that melody right away. And if I were to sing a wrong note somewhere in that melody, you would recognize instantly that this isn't the note you were expecting. What this means is that you already feel the difference between the different notes of our musical system. All you need is an organized path that lets you clarify these sensations one by one so that you finally understand which note of our musical system produces each of those beautiful sensations that you already know and love.

Jamming with the sounds. In addition to the singing and listening exercises you'll also be improvising with the same sounds on your instrument over jam tracks that I will give you. So not only will you be learning to recognize the sounds by ear, but you'll also be playing by ear throughout the entire course. In this way you can develop a true mastery of the sounds which includes every aspect of your musical being (imagining, singing, listening, playing, recognizing by ear). From there we can expand outward until you've mastered our entire musical system.

Complete multimedia course - 10 progressive units

This course is divided into 10 units of progressive difficulty. Each unit will teach you the next level of our ear training practice. This progressive system is the key to your success because each unit introduces just one new sound for you to enjoy and master. But these abilities stack up very quickly, and by the end of the course you'll be able to recognize all seven notes of the major scale by ear in the music all around you.

Through step-by-step video lessons, backing tracks and creative exercises, you'll learn to recognize the most important chords in popular music by ear. How is this course different from other ear training programs?

Learning in a musical context. Every step of the way, you'll be hearing these chords in beautiful songs and chord progressions. So the connection to real music is very present right from the start. This is one of the biggest complaints that musicians have about other ear training programs. They get better at identifying random sounds in the context of a quiz, but they still can't recognize anything in the songs they hear on the radio. So we think it's very important to study and appreciate the beauty of the sounds every step of the way, and that means hearing all of the sounds in the context of actual music.

Creativity. We believe that the best way to master harmony is to experience it first hand. So in addition to the listening and singing exercises, you'll also be jamming with your instrument and exploring all of these sounds very deeply. You'll be improvising with the chord notes, playing melodies that connect the chords together, and you'll even learn to improvise harmony parts to accompany a melody. (This is such a great ability to have in a band!)

Organized path. This course will immerse you in the feeling of the chords gradually, so every lesson builds on the abilities gained in the previous one. The key to any ear training is to go very deeply into the first few sounds until you can distinguish between them easily. This not only gives you confidence ("Hey, I can do this!") but it also serves as a jumping off point for recognizing everything else.

Testimonials from past students

"Awesome course if you want the most commonly used chords to sink down deep into your bones. It will really help you recognize chords by ear and to learn how to develop your skills on your own after the course." - Mike Leffler (guitar, United States)

"I am a beginner at this process of listening to chord changes. So this course was perfect for me. You couldn’t have done a better job teaching this. Your pace was ideal. Your videos, illustrations, pdf files, backing tracks, songs to listen to, couldn’t have been better." - John Young (piano, United States)

"IFR courses are so much deeper than simple ear training. Students are guided on a step-by-step exploration of aural harmony, studying not only the component sounds of each chord, but also how these chord tones function to push chords forwards in distinct progressions. Heightened harmonic awareness is then taken from relatively simple backing tracks to a playlist of fully arranged songs. With its focus on hearing harmony, and its comprehensive path from sound to song, Improvise for Real delivers the ear to living music, and is the foundation of a powerful musical education." - Steven Weiss (guitar, United States)
